When my lathe fell over, I thought the biggest problem was the broken motor mount. Turns out, it wasn't. The accident left me bruised, cut up, and staring at a couple hundred pounds of machinery lying on the ground. I couldn't lift it. I couldn't lever it back up. And even though I had neighbors nearby and friends who would have gladly come over to help, I simply couldn't bring myself to ask. Why? That's the question that stayed with me long after the bruises started to fade. In this episode, I'm finishing one last project from this lathe: a shallow blessing bowl turned from a beautiful piece of spalted spruce I brought home from Alaska. As the bowl takes shape, I wrestle with something I suspect a lot of us, especially men, understand all too well: our strange resistance to asking for help. Why are we so willing to help others, yet so uncomfortable admitting when we're the ones who need help? Maybe strength isn't always carrying the weight ourselves. Sometimes strength is simply being willing to say, *"I need your help."* This is also the final woodturning video I had recorded on this lathe before the accident. I'll be looking for a new lathe soon, so this feels a little like the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Thanks to everyone who has stuck around during the last few quiet weeks. Between the broken lathe and time with the grandkids, I haven't been able to get into the shop much. I'm grateful you're still here.
