Kai lived in a small village and learned early that approval was everything. A single phrase of praise—"Here is a good, reliable boy"—planted a seed that grew into an invisible tree weighing down his entire life.
By eighteen, Kai was completely hollow. He said yes to everything, helped everyone, pleased everyone. But inside, he was drowning. No time for his own dreams. No moments to understand who he actually was. Just endless performance.
One afternoon, exhausted and invisible despite giving everything, Kai met Master Oshin—an old carpenter who lived at peace, unbothered by the world.
Master Oshin didn't lecture. He simply handed Kai a wooden bowl of water and asked him to hold it out.
One minute passed. Then three. Then ten.
By the tenth minute, the light bowl felt like solid iron. Kai's arm burned.
Master Oshin asked: "Did the weight change?"
"No," Kai gasped.
"Then why is it heavier?"
And in that moment, Kai understood. The opinions of others weigh nothing individually. But he had been holding everyone's expectations, judgments, and disappointment in his hands every single day for years. His refusal to put the bowl down was killing him.
Master Oshin's words echoed: "Freedom is not being loved by everyone. Freedom is having the courage to be disliked."
For three days, Kai was terrified. The idea of saying no felt like stepping off a cliff.
But on the fourth day, he gathered his courage and said no to Daichi—a farmer who had dumped his tasks on Kai for years.
The sky didn't fall. The earth didn't swallow him.
And for the first time in years, the tight, suffocating knot in Kai's chest began to loosen.
Over the following years, Kai stopped performing. He became a carpenter—something he had always loved but never had time for. He built real relationships with people who loved him for who he actually was. He walked through life with his head held high, at total peace with himself.
The painful truth is this: you can do everything right and still be wrong in someone's eyes. You can be everything they need and still not be valued.
So don't try to be someone impossible to dislike. Become someone you don't have to abandon just to be loved.
Because at the end of the day, the greatest loss isn't being rejected by someone else. It's losing yourself trying to make sure they never dislike you.
