Even before they can meet George, the case becomes highly intriguing. George's victim, a prisoner called Turner, is untraceable. In fact his name and address are fiction. Rose visits George's son, Vincent, who has asked for his father's case to be re-opened. Eighteen year old Vincent lives with his grandmother, Gina. Both of them are wary of Rose who guesses that Vincent's impending fatherhood may be motivating his desire to meet the father he never knew. When Rose and Maloney do finally meet George he categorically refuses to co-operate as well. Their suspicions are further compounded when Maloney is warned off the case in a bar by a sinister stranger. Vincent and Gina agree to take Rose back through George's history. He was arrested in an alleged bank raid which went terribly wrong sixteen years ago. Rose uncovers a tragic case of careless racial stereotyping leading the police to frame George in order to cover up their own mistakes. In the light of this injustice Rose thinks she understands better George's reluctance to help them clear him of the "Turner" murder. Rose and Maloney track down "Turner's" wife, who reveals that her husband was called McCaffrey and that he was working as an undercover cop at the time of his murder, gathering information from inside the jail. Rose and Maloney are pulled deeper and deeper into George's world, determined to get to the truth even if they have to risk professional suicide and their very lives to find justice.
