Was there ever truly nothing before the Big Bang? Most people imagine a dark, empty void, then an explosion. But that picture is almost entirely wrong. The Big Bang wasn't an explosion. There was no empty space waiting for it to happen. And the word "before" might not even make sense when you push far enough back. In this video, we dismantle the most common misconception about the origin of the universe and replace it with what cosmologists actually mean by the Big Bang. We trace the history of the cosmos backward, from the galaxies and stars we see today, through the formation of the first atoms, through the nuclear furnace that forged hydrogen and helium in the first few minutes, through the quark-gluon plasma of the first microsecond, all the way to the frontier where Einstein's equations break down and produce infinities.
