Europe is roughly 390,000 safe, standard-meeting truck parking spaces short, so the quiet cab at the end of a driver's day is the part of the job that has to be found first.
Place: A parked sleeper-cab truck, night and rain, under European driving rules (with US drivers' testimony and data where named)
Crew: One driver, solo
Rotation: Nine hours of driving a day, ten on two days a week, then at least eleven hours of daily rest, reducible to nine
Distance from help: A parking space away from the road, if one can be found; the nearest person who loves them is far away
The clock runs out first: nine hours behind the wheel, a 45-minute break after four and a half, and a tachograph that keeps count. Then the search for a legal, safe place to stop, which the EU's 2025 parking study puts 390,057 spaces short. Engine off, curtains shut, the cab turns into a bedroom and a kitchen the size of a bunk. Dinner is cooked a few feet from the pillow, within the hot and cold limits food-safety agencies set, in plastic boxes that the FDA and the American Academy of Pediatrics do not agree about. Last come the phone calls home, a bunk that sleep studies say is measured in hours rather than comfort, and the tachograph starting a new day.

The ledger: sleep, a studied pattern of 5.8 hours was the one with the worst safety-event rate (NIOSH, 2016) · pay, none stated by the film's sources for this night · food, one US trade estimate puts eating out at $30-40 a day · distance, 390,057 safe spaces short across the EU
