Thinking about a career change in your 30s, but scared it means throwing away 10 or 15 years of salary, seniority and experience and starting over as a beginner? Changing industries and starting your career over are two completely different things. I left finance after reaching Director level and moved into tech, where I had a lot to learn and very little direct experience. I didn't go back to the bottom: after talking to recruiters and interviewing, I had several offers, and the job I chose paid materially more than the one I was leaving. In this video I break down how I'd approach a mid-career pivot or career pivot after 30, without starting from zero and without taking a pay cut by default. In this video: • Why leaving a successful career is harder than leaving a bad one • The biggest mistake experienced people make: reading job descriptions too literally • How to find your transferable skills by asking "what do people trust me to solve?" instead of "what was my title?" • Career strategy deep dive - How to translate your experience so a new industry understands why it matters (and why every professional needs to learn how to sell) • Skill gaps: what you genuinely need to learn, and why having things to learn doesn't mean having nothing to offer • Why you should stop deciding in your head whether the market wants you, and ask the market instead • 3 questions to answer before you switch industries: what can I carry with me, what is genuinely missing, and what is the cheapest way to test whether this option is real If you're asking yourself "am I too old to change careers?", "am I too senior?" or "am I too specialised?", don't reject yourself on behalf of a market you haven't even asked yet. Talking to a recruiter isn't resigning. Taking an interview isn't committing to a job. It's gathering information.
