Sri Uma Swayambhu Rameshwar Temple Ramatheertha, Athani Taluk, Belgaum District, Karnataka The ancient Sri Uma Rameshwara Temple of Ramatirtha is located approximately 36 kilometers from Athani and about 60 kilometers from the city of Vijayapura. According to legend, Lord Vishwanatha of Kashi (Varanasi) was so captivated by the natural beauty of this place that he chose to settle here.It is understood that the Ramatirtha Sri Uma Swayambhu Rameshwara Temple is a Trikuta (three-shrined) temple built in the 11th century. It features three sanctum sanctorum dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma, where the Trimurti are worshipped in the form of Lingas*.The main sanctum sanctorum houses Lord Shiva—specifically the *Swayambhu (self-manifested) Rameshwara; to the right of Rameshwara lies the sanctum of Lord Brahma, which is opened only during Diwali. The sanctum of Lord Vishnu is located on the left. The temple complex also houses shrines dedicated to Bhairava, Narasimha, and Hanuman. At the rear stands the temple of Ananda Nayaki (Goddess Parvati).The Jivanta Samadhi (living samadhi) of Trivikramananda Swamy is located here. Special rituals and prayers are conducted on the occasion of Mahashivaratri and on the last Monday of the month of Shravana. In addition to these, various other festivals—including Rama Navami—are celebrated. Accommodation facilities are available for visiting devotees, though prior intimation to the temple committee is required. Another interesting detail is that the Kannada films Ranavikrama (directed by Pavan Wadeyar and starring Puneeth Rajkumar) and The Villain (directed by Prem and starring Kiccha Sudeep and Shiva Rajkumar) were filmed here.
