How confident are you in the capability of your trainers and assessors? Perhaps their credentials are verified. Their trainer matrices are current. Industry currency is documented. Professional development has been completed. But how much does that actually tell you about their practice? In this RTO Risk Conversation, I explore the question: Where are we relying on people whose capability we have not really tested? Using a fictional RTO and several trainer scenarios, we look at: • the difference between evidence of credentials and evidence of capability • why a trainer matrix can't tell us everything about professional practice • the risks of assuming capability based on experience or tenure • why new trainers aren't necessarily the people whose capability we understand least • what observation can reveal that documentation can't • how validation and professional development can provide richer evidence of capability • early warning signs that might indicate a capability issue • the risk of becoming overly dependent on one highly capable person • whether our existing risk controls actually give us visibility of practice • how purposeful capability development can itself become a risk control The risk isn't necessarily that someone lacks capability. The risk is that the RTO doesn't actually know. ☕ This video is based on Card 04: Trainer Capability Risk from my 20 RTO Risk Conversations. The full set contains 20 detailed conversation cards designed to help RTO teams explore how risks might arise, what early warning signs they should be looking for and whether existing controls are actually working. They're available as a Pay What You Want resource: https://buymeacoffee.com/cluedineduca... Go deeper: Beyond the Trainer Matrix If this conversation has you questioning whether your trainer matrix tells you enough about trainer and assessor capability, my three-part Beyond the Trainer Matrix YouTube series explores this in much more depth. We look at defining and assessing capability, observing practice and gathering meaningful evidence, and turning that evidence into purposeful professional development and continuous improvement. ▶️ Beyond the Trainer Matrix:    • Beyond The Trainer Matrix   Clued In Capability Framework I've also developed the Clued In Capability Framework to help RTOs take a broader, more developmental approach to understanding and strengthening trainer and assessor capability. 👉 Clued In Capability Framework: https://www.cluedineducation.com.au/p... The question I'd leave you with is: Where are you confident in trainer and assessor capability because you have meaningful evidence of practice, and where are you confident simply because nothing has gone wrong yet? All RTOs, trainers, data and scenarios used in this video are fictional and have been created for discussion and professional learning purposes. #RTO #TrainerCapability #VocationalEducation #RTOLeadership #RiskManagement #VET #CluedInEducation
