This lesson explores what discrimination and bias can look like in an early years setting, including direct exclusion, hurtful comments and unfair routines or rules. It explains that bias may be conscious or unconscious, and that harm can occur even when it is not intended. You will learn how to respond promptly, calmly and respectfully without shaming or labelling a child. The focus should remain on the behaviour, followed by gentle correction, reassurance and support to help children repair relationships and rejoin play. The lesson also covers observing patterns, working consistently with colleagues, recording concerns according to setting procedures and supporting the child affected. Prevention is central: inclusive language, diverse books and displays, clear expectations, reflective practice and respectful partnership with families all help create a fair environment where children feel valued, safe and able to belong.
