What if movement could do more than make your body stronger?
Anchored Mind counselor Kelley Beecham joins Michael for a deeply personal conversation about the connection between movement and mental health. Kelley shares how fitness first became something relational, a way to spend time with friends, before taking on an entirely different role after a significant loss. In the midst of grief, when so much felt stuck in her mind and body, stepping toward a yoga mat or picking up weights gave her another way to process what she was carrying.
Together, Kelley and Michael explore what can happen in our brains and bodies when we move, from energy, focus, and emotional regulation to the way we show up in our relationships. Michael also shares his own experience with ADHD, including the shame he once carried around his diagnosis and the role movement has played in helping him better understand and work with his brain. Exercise isn't a replacement for medication or counseling, but it can be a powerful part of caring for our mental health. If there's one thing to take away from this conversation, it's this: movement has to work FOR you. If it's not enjoyable, it's not sustainable. Kelley and Michael talk about starting small, paying attention to what your mind and body actually need, letting those needs change through different seasons of life, and reframing taking care of yourself as something that benefits the people you love, too.
Kelley brings so much wisdom and relatability to this conversation, including answering some rapid-fire questions at the end you won't want to miss. Whether movement is already part of your rhythm or you're trying to figure out where to begin, this episode offers a whole new way to think about why we move.
