In 2003, a Croatian team published Y chromosome results that suggested many Croatian men carry a paternal lineage far older than the Slavic migrations. In a region where history is never just history, that finding mattered.
Where did the Croats really come from? For over a century, historians argued between two theories: Slavic migrants of the 6th-7th centuries, or Iranian-speaking Sarmatian warriors. This video looks at what genetics says, from Y chromosome studies of haplogroup I2a (Dinaric) to the 2023 ancient DNA research on the Balkans. We cover the Tanais inscription, the Illyrians, the Roman province of Dalmatia, and why language can spread without replacing a population.
We also keep the limits in view. The I2a Dinaric expansion date (around 2,000 years ago) is an estimate with a margin of error, and the 2023 ancient DNA suggests I2a may also have been present in early Slavic-era populations, so the lineage can’t be assigned to one side of the story. Linking modern Croats to specific Illyrian tribes would need more ancient DNA. Genetics does not define national identity, and this video says so directly.
