March 2025 Spring Steelhead! Early fish in icy conditions.

Coming out of one of the coldest winters in WNY in recent memory the steelhead streams have been tough to access. The icy conditions promise to provide some dynamite spring steelhead runs since ice has blocked their passage most of the winter. This trip was one of our first attempts to find open water that wasn’t muddy or full of slush. Playing a hunch we did a quick afternoon trip timing it with the warmest part of the day and increasing our chances of running into a few fish. The fish are really sluggish and biting very light in the ice cold water but we manage to hook up some beautiful spring steelhead drifting a bag and bead setup. Enjoy some early season action!
