What’s up YouTube!
Welcome back to another video here on the Museum Reviews channel! Today we are taking a look at the featured exhibit, “Old Masters, New Amsterdam,” currently on view at the New York Historical. This exhibition is a wonderful synthesis of art and historical artifacts and seeks to tell the distinctly Dutch origins of the city of New. York. The exhibition begins with a display of historical documents relating to founding of the Dutch colony “New Amsterdam.” From there, through a wide variety of Dutch masters paintings on loan from the Leiden Collection, National Gallery of Art (D.C.), and Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the exhibition helps give visitors a look into what life looked like for Dutch settlers in the new colony. Particularly important to this section are select paintings by Dutch master Rembrandt, and many of his most famous contemporaries including Frans Hals. Lastly, the exhibition finishes by giving an account of the transition of New Amsterdam becoming a British colony, and its eventual evolution into the state of New York following the American Revolution.

As always, all video and photos in this episode were taken by myself during my recent trip to New York!
