The Appian Way (Latin and Italian: Via Appia) was a Roman road that the Republic used as a main route for military supplies for its conquest of southern Italy in 312 BC and for improvements in communication. In July 2024, the Appian Way entered the UNESCO World Heritage List. A new Appian Way was built in parallel with the old one in 1784 as far as the Alban Hills region. The new road is the Via Appia Nuova ('New Appian Way') as opposed to the old section, now known as Via Appia Antica. The old Appian Way close to Rome is now a free tourist attraction. In this video, we show several attractions can be found in the first 5 km of the Via Appia Antica.
