Dental insurance starts over every plan year, but that is not always January. In this video, Dr. Spiros Karas, a general dentist in New Jersey for over thirty years, explains what resets, how to find your date, and the one step that keeps a bill from surprising you. If you live or work around Manalapan, Freehold, Marlboro or elsewhere in Monmouth County, this is the time of year to check.
What is an annual maximum on dental insurance?
It is the most your dental plan will pay toward your care in one plan year. When it runs out, the rest is yours to pay. It is a ceiling, not money set aside in your name.
Does dental insurance reset on January first?
Not always. Your benefits start over at the beginning of your plan year, and HealthCare.gov defines a plan year as a 12 month period of coverage that may not be the same as the calendar year. Your plan documents will show the date. If they do not, ask your employer's benefits office.
Why hasn't my dental insurance maximum gone up in years?
The American Dental Association wrote in December 2025 that many plans still promote a maximum level established some 40 years ago, and that the ADA does not support annual maximums at all. Some plans now offer higher maximums, so check yours.
Does unused dental insurance roll over to next year?
It depends entirely on your plan. Do not assume it carries over. Our front desk at the Manalapan office helps patients read their plans all the time.
Does an FSA or HSA reset at the end of the year?
They work differently. Under IRS rules, flexible spending account (FSA) money not used by the end of the plan year is forfeited, unless your employer offers a grace period of up to two and a half months or a limited carryover. Employers do not have to offer either. A health savings account (HSA) is different: the IRS says the money stays in your account until you use it. Ask your benefits office whether your FSA has a grace period, a carryover, or neither.
Is a pre treatment estimate a guarantee?
No. A pre treatment estimate, also called a predetermination, asks your plan what it expects to pay before bigger work. The American Dental Association notes that most carriers state the estimated payments are not guaranteed, because coverage is decided on the date the work is done.
Should I rush treatment before my benefits reset?
If your dentist has already recommended treatment and you have been putting it off, the end of your plan year is a good reason to book it. Never rush treatment you do not need because there is money left, and never put off treatment you do need because of a date. When it is safe, larger treatment can sometimes be planned across two plan years. That is a conversation with your dentist, not a rule.
