A family heirloom brought from Ireland in the 1840s or 1850s becomes the centrepiece of our journey through Quebec and the Ottawa-Gatineau region. We visit ancestral communities, research our family history and pass the shawl on to the next generation. Join us on the second instalment of our epic Quebec trip in 2026 as we travel through Boucherville, Gatineau, Ottawa and the beautiful Outaouais region. From heavy rain and Quebec roads to local restaurants, the Gatineau Hills and the Ottawa River, this journey combines travel, Canadian history, family stories and plenty of unexpected discoveries. In Ottawa, we explore the National Gallery of Canada, Major's Hill Park, Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, the National War Memorial and the historic Fairmont Château Laurier. We also visit the Gatineau region and travel north into the countryside around Wakefield, Alcove and Lascelles to explore the area where Brian's grandmother was born. Along the way, we meet friends and family, discover local history and learn more about the Irish and Scottish settlers who came to the region in the 1830s and 1840s. The highlight of this Quebec and Ontario road trip is a remarkable piece of family heritage: an embroidered woollen shawl brought from Ireland by Brian's second great-grandmother in the 1840s or 1850s. The heirloom has been passed down through generations and is now being entrusted to a younger generation of the family. Do you know anything about historic Irish or Scottish shawls, or can you identify the inscription or possible maker's mark? Let us know in the comments! And don't forget to like, subscribe and follow along for the next part of our 2026 journey to Montreal and Trois-Rivières. *CHAPTERS* 0:00 Introduction, Leaving Lévis, Day 4 1:08 Boucherville, St Hubert BBQ 2:31 Thurso, home of Guy Lafleur 2:46 Paugan Falls dam 2:57 Introduction, Gatineau, Day 5 3:32 Shopping at a Maxi store 4:47 Pacini Restaurant 5:11 Introduction, Ottawa, Day 6 5:37 Working Title Kitchen 7:33 National Gallery to Parliamentary grounds walk 12:04 Chateau Laurier to War Memorial walk 18:30 Swimming back to National Gallery 20:35 National Gallery visit 22:13 Thomas Taylor portrait 25:43 Rideau Chapel in National Gallery 29:08 Introduction, Outaouais, Day 7 31:58 BBQ 32:32 Introduction, Transferring of the Shawl, Day 8 33:51 Video wrap-up 34:58 Shawl inscription 37:04 Brian's notes 37:34 Subscribe *MUSIC* Music: Dreamscape Musician: VN VideoEditor
