He had less than a year of school. So how did he learn to be a lawyer and a president?
Follow a boy from a one-room log cabin in Kentucky to the White House, and see how borrowed books helped him build a new life.
In this calm story, you will hear the life of Abraham Lincoln in slow, simple English. Lincoln was born in 1809 in a log cabin. He had less than a year of formal school, but he borrowed books, recited what he read out loud, and taught himself grammar, surveying and law. He became a lawyer, and in 1860 he was elected the 16th president of the United States. You will also hear about the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863, and what it really did and did not do. Along the way, you will learn key words about reading, learning and honesty, and you will get three simple lessons for studying on your own. Some famous stories about Lincoln's childhood come from later sources, so we tell them carefully, with "the story goes."
