Every day, thousands of people walk over a Roman stadium without knowing it. Plovdiv, in southern Bulgaria, claims to be the oldest city in Europe — but is it?
In this episode we stand on the same hills and travel through 8,000 years: Neolithic farmers, Thracian Eumolpias, Philip of Macedon's Philippopolis, Roman Trimontium with its theatre and a 30,000-seat stadium, a church floor with some 70 species of birds, a staircase cut through solid rock, a city handed over as payment in a civil war, Ottoman Filibe, a capital that almost was — and what Plovdiv is building next. At the end: a one-day walking route to see it all yourself.
