America’s favorite candy brands built their reputations on nostalgia, childhood memories, and brightly wrapped treats but the history behind the candy aisle is far more complicated. Behind famous chocolate bars, chewy candies, and Halloween staples are stories involving labor disputes, wartime contracts, industrial consolidation, aggressive marketing, and cocoa supply chains that still face serious ethical problems.
In this video, we explore the darker history behind some of America’s most beloved candy brands. Hershey became deeply connected to American military history after developing high-calorie chocolate rations for soldiers, while the company also faced major labor unrest during the 1937 wave of sit-down strikes. Tootsie Rolls also became part of wartime life because their durability made them useful military rations during World War II.
The story continues into the modern chocolate industry. Cocoa from Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana remains associated with widespread child labor risks, and major manufacturers including Mars and Hershey operate within global supply chains that regulators continue to scrutinize.
From factory floors to cocoa farms, this is the history hiding behind America’s sweetest brands.
