This scenic summer drive through North Macedonia begins in the historic city of Ohrid, one of the most beautiful destinations in the Balkans. Known for its ancient churches, traditional architecture, and the crystal-blue waters of Lake Ohrid, the city offers a peaceful and charming starting point for a road trip into the surrounding mountains. As you leave the lakeshore behind, the bright June sun and the clear blue sky highlight the stunning contrast between the calm water and the green hills rising in the distance.
At 14:50, the journey reaches Struga (Струга), a lively town famous for the Black Drin River, which flows gently through its center. Struga is quieter than Ohrid but equally picturesque, with tree-lined riverbanks, cafés, and views of the mountain ridges of Jablanica and Karaorman standing proudly to the west and east. On a summer day, the sunlight reflects on the river surface, giving Struga a peaceful, serene atmosphere.
A few minutes later, at 19:00, the road passes through Misleshevo (Мислешево), a small and calm settlement just north of Struga. It is known for its fertile fields and wide open landscapes, where the distant mountains frame the horizon beautifully under the bright blue sky. At 20:38, you re-enter Struga, this time from the northern side, continuing deeper toward the countryside as the scenery gradually becomes more rural and more mountainous.
At 25:08, the drive reaches Vranishta (Враништа), a large village at the foothills of the Jablanica Mountains. Here the landscape begins to change: the terrain rises, the air becomes cooler, and the surroundings become greener and denser with forests. Vranishta is known for its traditional houses, small farms, and peaceful environment, making it a beautiful transition point from the plains into the mountain region.
By 29:20, you arrive in Veleshta (Велешта), another historical village surrounded by rolling hills and agricultural land. This area offers wide views toward the mountains, with the road gently curving upward. With the clear June sky overhead, the mountains of Jablanica appear sharper and more defined, inviting travelers to continue deeper into the countryside.
The route then follows the shimmering waters of the Black Drin River, reached at 42:10. This river is one of the most important waterways in the region, flowing north from Lake Ohrid through a narrow valley carved between the Jablanica and Karaorman mountain ranges. The sunlight dances on the river’s calm surface, and the surrounding slopes create a breathtaking natural corridor perfect for filming and photography.
At 51:30, the journey arrives at the impressive Globochica Dam (Брана Глобочица). The turquoise reservoir lies between steep mountain walls, forming one of the most dramatic landscapes in western North Macedonia. The dam and lake are surrounded by dense forests, rocky ridges, and the rising slopes of Jablanica Mountain, which dominate the skyline. Under the clear blue June sky, the colors of the water, mountains, and forest create a powerful and unforgettable view.
This entire drive combines rich cultural heritage, peaceful villages, and striking natural beauty, making it one of the most scenic routes in the region. It is a perfect summer road trip that shows the harmony between rivers, mountains, and traditional Macedonian landscapes
