Why did Hitler invade the Soviet Union in 1941 when Stalin was already fueling his war machine? Here is the real reason Operation Barbarossa began.
On the night of June 22, 1941, Soviet freight trains full of grain and oil were reportedly still rolling into German territory when around three million German soldiers crossed the border in the other direction. For nearly two years, a non-aggression pact and trade deals kept raw materials flowing into Germany while Hitler defeated France. But with Britain refusing to quit and Churchill ignoring peace offers, Hitler turned back to his oldest obsession from Mein Kampf: seizing living space in Ukraine and farmland to the east.
Berlin assumed the Red Army was a headless giant after Stalin's purges and the disastrous war in Finland. Stalin, meanwhile, dismissed intelligence warnings from Tokyo and London, convinced Hitler would never dare open a two-front war. What was planned as a swift summer campaign turned into a freezing slog outside Moscow, where summer uniforms met temperatures far below freezing, and far more Soviet divisions than Germany had expected.
