In this interview, Michael Heiser speaks with N.T. Wright about why Wright wrote The Day the Revolution Began and why he believes Western Christianity has too often reduced the meaning of Jesus’ death to a narrow, individualized transaction. Wright explains that his habit of communicating difficult theology in plain language was shaped by his family and decades of preaching, echoing C. S. Lewis’s conviction that a theologian who cannot translate academic ideas into ordinary speech either does not truly understand them or does not truly believe them. Turning to the cross, Wright argues that a full biblical theology of atonement must include incarnation, kingdom, resurrection, ascension, and the Spirit—not the cross alone—yet the New Testament insists that something decisive actually happened on the first Good Friday. He criticizes much Western atonement theology for separating Jesus’ kingdom proclamation from his death, treating the Gospels as mere background rather than allowing Passover, exodus, liberation, and Christ’s victory over the powers to shape the interpretation of Calvary. Wright therefore holds together multiple biblical strands—Christus Victor, representation, substitution, and moral example—rather than privileging one theory in isolation. His central critique is that Western Christianity has “Platonized” eschatology by making heaven the final destination for disembodied souls, “moralized” anthropology by reducing humanity’s problem to rule-breaking, and consequently “paganized” soteriology by portraying salvation as the appeasement of an angry God through an innocent victim. For Wright, these are not wholly false but are distorted “parodies” of a larger story: humans were created as image-bearers with a royal-priestly vocation to rule creation on God’s behalf, but idolatry fractured that calling, dehumanized people, and subjected them to enslaving powers. The cross, then, is God’s decisive victory over those powers and the means by which humans are reconciled to God, to one another, and to their true vocation in the new creation—not merely rescued from punishment so they can go to heaven. Heiser connects this with the divine-council and temple theology of Genesis, and Wright agrees that Eden functions as sacred space where heaven and earth meet, with humanity as God’s living image rather than a manufactured idol. Reading Adam’s sin through Romans 1, Wright identifies idolatry as listening to and serving a creature—the serpent—rather than the Creator, thereby surrendering human autonomy and vocation to lesser powers. Finally, Wright suggests that the cross can communicate its truth to a child before any full theory is grasped: the story of Jesus’ death and God’s love carries a symbolic and transformative power that draws people into true worship of the true Image-Bearer, with theological explanation following later.
