This song was born from being exposed to the concept of In Lak'Ech. Spiraling from Mayan culture through Luis Valdez’s epic poem Pensamiento Serpentino to Tucson’s Mexican American Studies class to you at this moment watching this video. In Lak'Ech came to our Step Up program in Portland, Oregon and serves to daily honor the diversity in our community and empower us to study the people's history. This is sort of a folk-rap Hip Hop song inspired by In Lak' Ech because the lyrics change to match the times and accentuates the Hip Hop element: Knowledge of Self and Community. This video captures the vibrant community of Open School East in 2018. May the vibrancy of In Lak'Ech continue to inspire towards the depths of com Shoutout to the Open School East Fam- all young people who displayed their talent! My Voice Music- Luke Hall for recording and engineering the song Precious Knowledge Documentary for the exposure to In Lak'Ech This song simultaneously pays homage to K'naan an incredible Hip Hop artist. His 2005 song Until the Lion Learns to Speak off the Dusty Foot Philosopher album struck a chord in me and this cadence and some of the lines reflect his original work. You are my other me. Si te hago daño a ti, If I do harm to you, Me hago daño a mi mismo. I do harm to myself. Si te amo y respeto, If I love and respect you, Me amo y respeto yo. I love and respect myself. Rap: Until the salmon learns to speak, the tales of water will be weak, poetry knows no boundaries, from sandy river to the sea, see I am you and you are me,Tu eres mi otro yo! Tu eres mi otro yo! Until the land learns to speak, ancestral tales will be weak, poetry knows no boundaries, from city streets to cascade peaks, see I am you and you are me,Tu eres mi otro yo! Tu eres mi otro yo! Until the oppressed are heard when they speak tales of America will be weak, poetry knows no boundaries from Standing Rock to Wounded Knee, see I am you and you are me, Tu eres mi otro yo! Tu eres mi otro yo! Until every race are heard when they speak the tales of the city will be weak, poetry knows no boundaries from St. Johns to the outer east, see I am you and you are me, Tu eres mi otro yo! Tu eres mi otro yo! Until the streets can learn to speak the tales of hip hop will be weak, poetry knows no boundaries from 503 to the NYC, see I am you and you are me, Tu eres mi otro yo! Tu eres mi otro yo! Until our hearts can learn to speak the tales of humans will be weak, poetry knows no boundaries from our soul to the galaxies, see I am you and you are me, Tu eres mi otro yo! Tu eres mi otro yo! Rock to rhythm we're living with love Rock to the rhythm we're living respect Rock to rhythm we're living with soul Rock to rhythm we're living to grow Rock to rhythm we're living Let’s go What’s that heartbeat in your chest saying What’s the pulse of the earth saying What’s that ancient echo through the ages saying Those are questions worth questing with Tu eres mi otro yo!
