Everyone knows King Solomon as the wisest man who ever lived. Almost no one knows the queen who came to test that reputation — and nearly broke it.
She was called the Queen of Sheba. Her real name, in Ethiopian tradition, was Makeda — ruler of a wealthy incense-trading kingdom that historians still argue over the location of. When word reached her of a king whose wisdom was said to be unmatched, she didn't send a messenger. She crossed hundreds of miles of desert herself, with a caravan of gold, spices, and riddles designed to expose a fraud.
What happened inside Solomon's court in Jerusalem became one of the most retold stories in the ancient world — claimed by Ethiopian emperors as the origin of their royal bloodline, woven into the Kebra Nagast, and linked, controversially, to the fate of the Ark of the Covenant itself. This is the story of Makeda, the Queen of Sheba: her test, her son, and the empire she left behind at the Marib Dam and the ruins of ancient Axum.
