This video illustrates the viability of growing pomegranates in the mild winter, cool summer temperate climate of the Pacific Northwest. Selecting locally adapted cultivars is key to consistent production. To generate the higher summer heat units needed to ripen the fruit in our maritime climate, it is best to plant pomegranates against warm, sunny, south-facing walls or in high tunnels. Since these trees are hardy to -11°C and the fruit is harvested before winter (late October / November) it is possible to grow them in the ground unprotected. Hand pollination is helpful.
