There is a controversy over the meaning of "Buddha": two of the leading monastic scholars and translators don't agree. A few weeks ago I posted a video on Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi's idea that "enlightenment" translates "bodhi" and "the Enlightened One" translates "Buddha". In this video I discuss Ven. Bhikkhu Anālayo's opposing view that "awakening" translates "bodhi" and "the Awakened One" translates "Buddha". This difference of opinions should help us get more of an idea about what the words mean and why translation is so difficult and important! 📙 Check out my new book, A Handbook of Early Buddhist Wisdom, with a Foreword by Ven.
