10 Most Underrated 80s Metal Guitarists Who Deserved to Be Legends

In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, the guitar hero ruled rock. Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption" helped redefine what was possible on electric guitar. Soon, tapping, sweep picking, neoclassical scales, blazing solos and technical perfection became defining features of the era. Then the 1990s arrived. Within just a few years, the musical landscape had changed dramatically. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains helped bring a different approach to rock—one built around rawer tones, heavier riffs, emotion and songwriting rather than technical guitar displays. But did grunge actually kill the guitar solo? Not exactly.
