He was someone I could talk to about life without feeling judged, and he was my protector. When he became sick, I had the privilege of being there for him. I did everything I could to care for him, make him comfortable, and surround him with love. Watching him leave this world was one of the hardest experiences of my life, but I will forever be grateful that I was able to love him through that part of his journey. But when I look at my life, I realize that pieces of him are still here. They are in the things he taught me. They are in the way I love and protect my children. They are in the memories we made. But I can look back now with love, grace, and gratitude for everything he gave me—and even for some of the lessons that came from the things he got wrong. Most importantly, I thank God that before my daddy left this earth, he gave his life to God and was baptized. That gives my heart a kind of peace that words cannot fully explain.
