Why does only 20% of your DAP reach the plant? In this AgriTalk clip, [Guest name] explains why fertilizer straight from the bag isn't plant food until soil bacteria convert it, and shares his "bhatti khad" method to prepare fertilizer before it goes into the field. When you put SSP or DAP into the field, it first has to be converted by phosphate-solubilising bacteria (PSB) before the plant can use it. He says this takes 25 to 28 days, and only about 20% gets used, and only if the soil has PSB and rhizobium bacteria, carbon above 1%, moisture, and soil covering the fertilizer. Without bacteria, in his experience, part of the fertilizer gets fixed in the soil and makes it hard. His answer is bhatti khad. Take the fertilizer you plan to apply, for example 150 kg of DAP and potash, and mix it with three times as much soil from your own field. Lay plastic underneath, add compost if you have it, then 10 kg of cow dung, 1–2 litres of cow urine and a little jaggery. Moisten it lightly, mix it well and cover it with plastic, so the conversion starts before the fertilizer reaches your crop.
