How can advanced mapping technology support Traditional Owners to manage and plan for Country?
Led by the Anindilyakwa Land Council, this CRCNA-supported project brought together cutting-edge geospatial technology and Anindilyakwa cultural knowledge to strengthen community-led planning across the Groote Archipelago in the Northern Territory.
Working with Aerometrex, Geoscience Australia and the Australian National University, the project developed high-resolution spatial datasets and mapping tools to support cultural heritage protection, land and sea management, infrastructure planning and climate adaptation.
Covering approximately 3,375 km², the research has delivered a lasting resource for the Anindilyakwa Land Council and a practical model for First Nations-led spatial planning across northern Australia.
The project was recognised with the 2024 NT Geospatial Excellence Award for Community Impact.
