The first French nuclear test in Polynesia took place on 2 July 1966 at 5.35 am on the atoll of Moruroa. France tested its bombs in the middle of the Pacific Ocean until 1974. For Charles de Gaulle, mastering nuclear weapons would guarantee the country's military security and independence. In September 1968, a young officer who had just graduated from Saint Cyr Military Academy flew to Papeete where he was to be stationed. Thanks to his photos, we are able to revisit this astonishing period in the history of France. François Dullin was 27 years old and single. He would spend 2 years in Polynesia, with a frontline view of the incredible French armada located 16 000 km from the French mainland and where he would be present at the detonation of the atom bomb.
