Compliments came like dandelion seeds,
Soft little somethings caught in the breeze.
“Beautiful,” “brilliant,” “darling,” “divine”
They barely bent the air at the time.
Promises pressed like pennies in palms,
Warm when they’re given, cold when they’re gone.
Secrets were stones that we swallowed whole,
Small in the mouth, but heavy below.
Funny how language can linger,
Long after lips let it go.
You never felt what you handed me.
You never had to know.
Words have weight.
Some float, some fall.
Some barely touch you,
Some bury it all.
You said it once,
Then walked away
How could five little words
Weigh this much today?
I’ve carried your sentence
Since the night we were through.
Funny how words weigh nothing
Till they’re spoken by you.
“I’m fine” was a feather I wore like a lie,
Light on my lips, lead-lined inside.
“Maybe” was mercury, restless and bright,
Slipping through fingers and staining the night.
“Sorry” came softly, a paper-thin thing,
Too light for the damage, too late to mean.
Your silence was heavier still somehow
Nothing has never weighed more than it does now.
Every syllable settled,
Every vowel sank like a stone.
You dropped them and left them behind you.
I carried them home.
Words have weight.
Some float, some fall.
Some barely touch you,
Some bury it all.
You said it once,
Then walked away.
How could five little words
Weigh this much today?
I’ve carried your sentence
Since the night we were through.
Funny how words weigh nothing
Till they’re spoken by you.
I weighed your “always”
Ounces at first.
I weighed your “never”
That one was worse.
I weighed every “love you,”
Each “swear” and “believe.”
But nothing was heavier
Than five words you gave me:
“I don’t love you anymore.”
Five little words.
Nineteen letters.
One quiet sentence
I couldn’t make lighter.
So I dragged it through winters,
I wore it through springs,
Till I finally wondered…
Why am I carrying
Something you said?
Words have weight.
But weight can be laid down.
Stones can be dropped.
Chains make a sound.
You said it once.
I heard what you said.
But your sentence doesn’t get
To sentence me yet.
So here are your five words.
I’m giving them back.
No anger, no answer,
No weight in my hands.
And maybe words weigh nothing
When you finally let go.
“Beautiful” floats.
“Sorry” falls.
“Always” echoes
Down empty halls.
“I don’t love you anymore”
Was heavy…
Until it wasn’t
mine to carry.
