Gjirokastër (or Argyrokastro in Greek Αργυρόκαστρο = silver castle) is a medieval town in the south of Albania (Shqipëria) close to the Greek border. The city has a considerable Greek population and in World War I the area was part of Greece until it was definitively incorporated by Albania in 1923. The city has a unique architectural building style which is very comparable to the Pelion Region in Greece. Gjirokastër is a UNESCO Heritage Site. Above the town on a hill is a Byzantine castle.
