Tum Kahan Jaaoge, Hum Kahan Jaayenge? | Ek Dard Bhari Nazm | Jaun Elia sensitive nazm|lost love|sukhan e anjum “Tum Kahan Jaaoge, Hum Kahan Jaayenge?” is a profound and emotionally charged Urdu ghazal by Jaun Elia, exploring displacement, loneliness, cultural decline, shattered dreams, and the endless search for belonging. Every verse carries the pain of a restless soul returning from a long journey only to discover that neither the destination nor the desire remains the same. The ghazal begins with an unforgettable question: تم کہاں جاؤ گے، ہم کہاں جائیں گے؟ Tum kahaan jaaoge, hum kahaan jaayenge? This is not merely a question about where one will physically go. It represents a deeper uncertainty about life, identity, love, and belonging. When relationships disappear, cities lose their soul, and cherished dreams turn into illusions, where can a person finally find refuge? Yoon kaho, umr barbaad kar aaye hain. expresses the devastating realization that an entire lifetime has passed in waiting, searching, and pursuing something that could never truly be attained. The speaker returns carrying not victory or fulfillment, but the painful awareness of time lost forever. The ghazal also invokes the literary and cultural memory of Delhi and Lucknow: میرؔ دِلّی سے نکلے، گئے لکھنؤ Meer Dilli se nikle, gaye Lucknow. Through the mention of Meer, Delhi, and Lucknow, the poetry connects personal exile with the larger story of Urdu language, literature, migration, and cultural displacement. These cities represent more than geography: they symbolize a refined literary civilization, cherished traditions, and gatherings that have slowly faded with time. The imagery of a gathering about to disperse creates an atmosphere of approaching separation: ہے بکھرنے کو یہ محفلِ رنگ و بو Hai bikharne ko yeh mehfil-e-rang-o-boo. The once-beautiful gathering of color and fragrance now stands at the edge of dissolution. Conversations have become whispers, familiar companions have disappeared, and every corner carries the sadness of an ending. Jaun Elia’s powerful imagery continues through the deserted late-night setting: اوّلِ شب کا مہتاب بھی جا چکا Awwal-e-shab ka mahtaab bhi ja chuka. آخرِ شب ہے، خالی ہیں جام و سبو Aakhir-e-shab hai, khaali hain jaam-o-suboo. The moon has passed, the night is approaching its end, and the cups are empty. These images represent emotional exhaustion and the conclusion of an era. Nothing remains except silence, memory, and the faint traces of a gathering that was once full of life. One of the most painful moments arrives when the speaker admits: کوئی حاصل نہ تھا آرزو کا مگر سانحہ یہ ہے، اب آرزو بھی نہیں۔ Koi haasil na tha aarzoo ka magar, Saaniha yeh hai, ab aarzoo bhi nahin. The tragedy is no longer that desire remained unfulfilled. The greater tragedy is that even the desire itself has disappeared. This couplet captures a condition beyond ordinary heartbreak—the moment when hope has been exhausted so completely that the heart no longer wishes for anything. Another striking image appears in the verse: آہ! Aah! Saraab apna sarmaaya-e-justuju. The mirage becomes the only reward of the search. What appeared to be a destination was merely an illusion, yet the traveler devoted an entire life to reaching it. This idea reflects Jaun Elia’s distinctive poetic world, where longing, intellectual restlessness, and existential disappointment meet. The ghazal also mourns the disappearance of passion, rebellion, and freedom: دشت میں رقصِ شوقِ بہار اب کہاں باد پیمائیِ دیوانہ وار اب کہاں۔ Dasht mein raqs-e-shauq-e-bahaar ab kahaan, Baad-paimaai-e-deewana-vaar ab kahaan. The desert no longer witnesses the wild dance of spring, and the old madness of wandering with the wind has vanished. The world may continue, but its passion, beauty, and spiritual intensity have been diminished. This presentation by Sukhan-e-Anjum brings together the ghazal’s atmosphere of night, fading cultural memory, emotional homelessness, and unanswered questions. It is dedicated to everyone who has experienced separation, migration, loneliness, lost time, or the painful realization that some journeys end without a destination. Listen to this unforgettable ghazal, reflect upon its layered meanings, and share it with fellow lovers of Urdu poetry.
