• Breathing Texture • Between Time Signatures - Between 16, perhaps 32 crotchets; disciplined into common time, contained by 5 patient lines, I found myself thinking of you. Not because the melody asked to. Because somewhere, between the measures; something imperceptible had begun leaning against the room. -- Morning entered, through the bay window; without announcing its glow. Light did not illuminate so much as discover - finding suspended specks of dust, & teaching it briefly: how to become known. The room remained empty, yet no longer alone. -- Composition has always hidden itself there: not in arrival, but in the quiet revisions of atmosphere. A voice withheld. A harmony introduced - only after the ear has forgotten it was waiting to hear. Every few bars, another layer - almost absent, almost nothing, until its absence became impossible to bear. -- Some textures breathe this way. They never ask to inherit the melody, never interrupt the pulse; never raise their voice above the silence they obey. Yet every note finds itself leaning, almost imperceptibly, towards where they quietly stay. -- Perhaps that is why - the most enduring presences rarely occupy the centre. They alter the acoustics instead, until every silence begins to remember what it once entered.
