When Summer Leaves - The Real Rhythm of Life in Puglia

What happens in southern Italy when summer begins to fade? This week, life in Puglia is changing. After 17 weeks without rain, the skies finally opened over Salento. The summer lights have come down, schools and businesses have reopened, street works have returned and the beaches are becoming quieter. We take you shopping in Nardò in search of frozen berries, bring home our first indoor plant and enjoy the simple, everyday moments that make our house in Italy feel like home. We also introduce you to the unforgettable Gennafeffa—known as Neffa—a remarkable 95½-year-old woman we met at Santa Maria al Bagno. A familiar face at the beach, she shared stories from her long life and reminded us how belonging grows through people, places and conversations. To finish the week, we attend the beautiful Festa di Santa Maria at Santa Maria al Bagno with members of our Casa Mia community. The statue is carried through town, then taken out to sea by boat and welcomed back beneath a sky filled with fireworks. It was also Mark and Tod’s final evening with us before returning home, making the celebration especially meaningful.
