This series is New Adult, often described as 'Lesbian Necromancers'. It has some Young Adult tropes, like young protagonists, teenage rebellion against authority, and a magic school. But it’s combined with more adult fiction, darker content, mature themes, plus more advanced storytelling. This series surprised me!
