Thor Heyerdahl gave up zoology, took his Norwegian wife to a remote Pacific island with no matches and no medicine, and spent a year living as Robinson Crusoe. He came back with a theory about how ancient South Americans had crossed the Pacific. Nobody believed him. So he built a balsa raft and did it himself. In this conversation with Michael Parkinson, he talks about Kon-Tiki, the papyrus boats Ra I and Ra II, and the scientists who had never once seen a balsa raft but were very confident it would sink. He also talks about the last man alive who had tasted human flesh, a bowl of fermented breadfruit buried for ten years, and a Polynesian phrase that means both "come and eat" and "good morning." He learned the difference too late. Legendary talk show host Sir Michael Parkinson's official YouTube channel.
