Step into the royal heritage of North Kolkata! 🏛️✨ In this episode of Kolkata Puja Parikrama, iarnabS takes you to the historic Shobhabazar Rajbari to experience the timeless beauty, devotion and traditions of one of Kolkata’s most celebrated Bonedi Bari Durga Pujas.
With its magnificent white-and-red façade, ornate arches, grand chandeliers, traditional courtyard and beautifully adorned Maa Durga idol, Shobhabazar Rajbari offers a different experience from the modern, theme-based Durga Puja pandals. Here, the charm lies in the history, family traditions and centuries-old cultural heritage of Bengal.
📍 ABOUT SHOBHABAZAR RAJBARI
Shobhabazar Rajbari is one of the most historically significant aristocratic family homes associated with Durga Puja in Kolkata. The family puja was initiated by Maharaja Nabakrishna Deb in 1757, the year of the Battle of Plassey.
The celebration became an important part of the social and cultural history of colonial Calcutta. Historical accounts associate the early festivities with British officials, including Robert Clive. The Rajbari remains an important destination for people interested in Bengal’s heritage, architecture and traditional Durga Puja celebrations.
🏛️ WHAT MAKES THIS DURGA PUJA SPECIAL?
🔸 A heritage Bonedi Bari Puja: Experience the traditions of an aristocratic Bengali household, where Durga Puja is rooted in family history and generations of devotion.
🔸 The magnificent Thakurdalan: Admire the courtyard and its elegant arches, ornamental columns, chandeliers and distinctive architectural details.
🔸 Traditional Ek Chala Durga: The goddess and her divine family are traditionally presented together within a single decorative framework, preserving the classic Bengali style of idol worship.
🔸 A glimpse of old Kolkata: The Rajbari reflects a fascinating period in which royal patronage, colonial-era society, religion and Bengali culture intersected.
🔸 A living cultural heritage: Durga Puja is not only a religious celebration but also an expression of Bengali identity, craftsmanship, artistic traditions and community life. UNESCO inscribed Durga Puja in Kolkata on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021.
📜 A BRIEF HISTORY
Maharaja Nabakrishna Deb established the Rajbari’s famous Durga Puja in 1757, following the Battle of Plassey. The celebration is closely associated with the history of eighteenth-century Calcutta and the emergence of grand aristocratic family festivals in Bengal.
Over time, Shobhabazar became synonymous with the Bonedi Bari tradition. Its historic mansions, ceremonial courtyard and traditional idol worship preserve an important chapter of Kolkata’s cultural story.
The estate is associated with two historic branches, commonly known as the Boro Rajbari and Choto Rajbari. Both are connected with the family’s legacy, so visitors should distinguish between the different Rajbari premises when planning a heritage walk.
