Hitler Youth Surrounded These Tuskegee Airmen—Then German Guards Stepped In
Captured Tuskegee Airmen faced a Hitler Youth mob—and German guards became their unlikely protectors. This World War II history video follows the Red Tails from combat over southern France into captivity inside Nazi Germany.
In this documentary-style retelling, explore the 332nd Fighter Group’s dangerous low-level missions ahead of Operation Dragoon, the capture of wounded American pilots, and a tense railway-platform encounter with radicalized Nazi youth. Their struggle continues through interrogation at Dulag Luft, imprisonment at Stalag Luft III, and the brutal forced winter marches of 1945.
At the heart of this account is a painful contradiction: Black American officers fighting Nazi Germany also faced segregation in their own military and country. Their journey raises difficult questions about propaganda, racism, military duty, and the bonds that helped prisoners survive.
IN THIS VIDEO:
• The Nazi propaganda campaign against downed Allied airmen
• The Tuskegee Airmen and the Red Tails’ combat missions
