Hamlin doesn’t have an instrument approach, and the weather wasn’t going to let us fly in under VFR. Going into this flight, I knew a diversion to Abilene was likely. What I didn’t know was just how low the ceilings would be. In this video, we fly IMC along our route toward Hamlin, watch the weather deteriorate, and ultimately divert to Abilene with ceilings down around 500 ft AGL. In this video: Planning an IMC flight with a built-in diversion plan Why Hamlin was never going to work (no instrument approach) What the weather looked like en route Making the call and diverting to Abilene Flying the approach down to 500 ft AGL ceilings 00:00 - 01. Introduction 03:47 - 02. Run up 05:04 - 03. Picking up our clearance over the phone before take off 05:46 - 04. Take off 13:59 - 05 Requesting the RNAV 35 approach 20:49 - 06. Back in to IMC 25:23 - 07. Capturing the Glide slope 27:35 - 08. Breaking out at 500 AGL Always have an out. Have you ever had to divert because of ceilings? Tell me about it in the comments.
