Chris's coaching intake questionnaires cover a lot of ground — fitness history, equipment, fueling, injury background. The thing athletes flag most often is none of those. It's imposter syndrome and self-doubt. It shows up identically whether an athlete has done fifteen Ironmans or is two weeks out from a first sprint triathlon. This episode unpacks why that is, where those voices come from, and how to redirect them. Self-talk is a trainable skill. This episode is how you start training it. You can get a free set of exercises that will help you identify and then use positively the voices in your head: https://www.campfireendurance.com/you... TAKEAWAYS • You are not the thoughts in your head — you are the entity that can observe them. That distinction is the foundation of all the work that follows. • Every "should" is a red flag. The word signals that a protective voice is asserting control over an arena that doesn't offer guarantees. Sport is exactly that arena. • The inner critic is a bodyguard with bad judgment. It formed to protect you from a past hurt and only knows one move: tell you to stop. You can thank it, redirect it, and reassign it. • Second-person self-talk lands harder. Research confirms what your inner critic already figured out — "you've got this" outperforms "I've got this." Hijack the grammar. • Short cue words carry you through the hard parts. On race day, when you're too tired to argue with your own brain, a single word (eyes, shoulders, elbow) returns you to the moment better than a sentence ever will.
