Kolkata, O Kolkata is the opening song of Sumaiya Chowdhury’s Kolkata Song Series, an original musical journey created to explore Kolkata through its places, people, culture, heritage and everyday life. This first song introduces the city as a whole. From the Hooghly riverfront and Kolkata’s ghats to College Street, Kumartuli, Shobhabazar, Esplanade, Park Street, Jorasanko and the Maidan, the song brings together some of the sights, sounds and emotions that form Kolkata’s distinctive identity. It also looks beyond landmarks. Kolkata is shaped every day by students, teachers, doctors, engineers, workers, shopkeepers, drivers, artists, service workers and countless others whose work keeps the city moving. Books, art, education, conversation, sport, neighbourhood life and human connection all become part of the same story. Kolkata, O Kolkata serves as the introduction to the wider Kolkata Song Series. Future songs in the series will travel more deeply through Kolkata’s different areas, neighbourhoods and important places, exploring their individual character, history, people and local stories through original music. From north to south, from historic neighbourhoods to modern streets, each part of Kolkata carries its own voice. This series aims to give those voices a song.
