Why SpongeBob Works (And Nickelodeon Forgot Why)
In 2026, a cartoon about a sponge who flips burgers is the number two streaming title among adults 18–34. It's on its seventeenth season. And yet every one of its ten highest-rated episodes comes from the first three seasons. The audience never left — so what changed? This is a breakdown of the rules Stephen Hillenburg built SpongeBob on: the innocent and the grump, drawing instead of writing, "smaller, smaller", and a marine biologist's world. And how, over twenty years, Nickelodeon kept the packaging and forgot the rules.
