My Porsche 987 Boxster Spyder’s paint didn’t match—and after living with it for nearly a year, I finally took it back to the body shop to make it right. Following the accident repair, both bumpers were replaced and painted separately from the car. Unfortunately, the finished bumpers were noticeably lighter than the original 16-year-old Arctic Silver paint (92U). I hoped the new paint might cure and become less noticeable over time, but the mismatch never went away. This time, the body shop brought the entire car in and created several different spray-out cards for me to compare in direct sunlight, shade, different angles and across multiple panels. Somehow, I ended up being asked to help choose the final paint formula—even though I am definitely not a professional automotive painter. After nearly two hours of comparing the options, studying photos and using AI as another analytical tool, we narrowed everything down and selected paint formula #5. Thankfully, the painter agreed—and the finished result looks phenomenal. The original mismatch felt like roughly 15%. The new paint is close enough that I would call it within approximately 1%, and I am completely satisfied with the result. The body shop honored its lifetime warranty, repainted both bumpers at no cost and ultimately made everything right. In this video, I also discuss: • Why silver automotive paint is so difficult to match • Why the complete car should be present during paint matching • Comparing spray-out cards in different lighting conditions • Using AI as a tool without blindly trusting it • Why the body shop—not the customer—must own the final result • Blending adjacent panels versus properly matching the paint • Protecting a 987 Spyder when it must be stored outside • What I would do differently next time The next step is allowing the fresh paint to fully cure and off-gas before having the bumpers protected with paint protection film.
