According to the devotional tradition associated with Arunagirinathar, Lord Murugan blessed him with the opening words “Muthai Tharu…” and this hymn is revered as his first Thiruppugazh composition. Different editions use different numbering systems. Kaumaram lists “Muthai Tharu” as Thiruppugazh No. 6, associated with Thiruvarunai, while another traditional cataloguing system identifies it as the first hymn.
