NITHI BRIDGE: THE STORY, THE TRAGEDY AND A NEW BEGINNING! For decades, Nithi Bridge in Tharaka Nithi County, Kenya, has been associated with some of the country's most devastating road accidents. But what makes this place so notorious, and could a new bridge finally change its story? In this video, I take you on an exploration of the famous Nithi Bridge along the Embu–Meru highway. I walk through the surrounding landscape, explore the steep and winding road, get a closer look at the Nithi River beneath the bridge, and discover something interesting about the different generations of bridges found here. I also take you beneath the bridge to experience the Nithi River and appreciate the beautiful but challenging landscape surrounding this famous location. We look at three structures: The existing Nithi Bridge, opened in 1985, which has become infamous because of numerous fatal road accidents. The oldest, smaller bridge, which appears to have been designed for a much narrower crossing. The proposed new Nithi Bridge, whose construction has now commenced. But there is more to this story! On 22 October 2026, the government announced the commencement of construction of a new Nithi Bridge, an ambitious project estimated to cost KSh 7.5 billion. The project includes: An approximately 880-metre-long bridge. A height of approximately 100 metres above the Nithi River valley. 2.7 kilometres of approach roads. An expected construction period of 24 months. The new project is intended to improve road safety by addressing the challenging curves and steep gradients associated with the existing crossing.
