A firestorm hit a park in the middle of Tokyo in 1923, and in a few minutes it killed 38,000 people who thought they had gone somewhere safe. That is not even the strangest place on this list.
These 13 places are all inside Tokyo, the 23 wards and the greater metro area, and every single one of them is still standing today. A major bank built its own headquarters around a cursed burial mound instead of over it. Airport workers will not let anyone touch a shrine gate standing in the middle of an active runway at Haneda. A neighborhood lost its own name when the government erased it off the map on purpose. A tower designed to renew itself forever got torn down before its own owners would spend one more night inside.
We start with Tokyo's most famous cursed spot, the Masakado Kubizuka in the heart of the financial district, and count down through two of the shogunate's Edo era execution grounds, a Buddhist goddess with a 200 year grudge against couples in rowboats, an unsolved 1994 murder, a neighborhood the government tried to erase, a housing block the press once called the Mecca for Suicides, and a nightclub fire that killed 44 people in one night. We end at the site of Tokyo's single deadliest hour, a 1923 firestorm that erased 38,000 people so completely that most of them never got a name back.
Every location in this video is documented: real history, real records, real avoidance behavior from the people who live closest to each place. Nothing here is invented.
Which one of these 13 is going to stay with you the longest? Let us know in the comments, we read every one.
