German history in 33 minutes: 2,000 years of a country knocked back to zero four times and got up again every time. In November 1923, one US dollar cost about four trillion German marks, and a lifetime of savings could not buy a loaf of bread. We start with the Germanic tribes who trapped three Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest, then follow Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Empire, Martin Luther and the Thirty Years' War, the rise of Prussia under Frederick the Great and Bismarck, the Weimar Republic, the rise of Hitler, the Holocaust, Zero Hour in 1945, the Berlin Wall and reunification. German history sits at the center of European history, so this is also a tour of European history from Rome to the European Union. If you want German history explained with maps, animation and a little humor, this is the whole story in one sitting.
German history, chapter by chapter (part of our European history series):
0:00 Intro: Four Times Zero
0:46 The Traitor in the Forest
4:53 The King Who Could Barely Write
8:04 An Empire in Name Only
11:28 One Monk, One Door, One Split
14:06 Zero No. 1: The Thirty Years' War
17:07 Zero No. 2: Prussia and Napoleon
22:11 Zero No. 3: Money, Dictatorship and War
28:24 Zero Hour: The Comeback
A note on numbers: in German history, as in all European history, death tolls for the Thirty Years' War and early medieval events such as Verden (782) are estimates, and historians disagree on them. Historical borders on the maps are approximate. The Holocaust figure of six million Jewish victims follows the consensus of historians.
