Today, we're traveling back to the year 2000 to take a look at Soldier of Fortune: Platinum Edition, one of the most controversial, violent, and memorable FPS games of its era. 🔫💥 Developed by Raven Software, this classic puts us in the shoes of John Mullins, a special operations expert who must travel across different parts of the world to investigate a dangerous threat involving nuclear weapons and terrorist organizations. But if there was one thing that made Soldier of Fortune truly famous, it was its revolutionary GHOUL system, a technology that allowed enemies to react differently depending on which part of their body was hit. For its time, this localized damage system, combined with the game's intense violence and gore, made it one of the most controversial and eye-catching shooters of the early 2000s. 💀 Built on a heavily modified version of the Quake II engine, Soldier of Fortune combines military action, international missions, a wide arsenal of weapons, and a campaign filled with dangerous environments, ranging from urban areas and military installations to industrial complexes and other locations around the world. In this video, we'll take a look at what this legendary FPS was like, exploring its gameplay, graphics, and the feature that helped turn it into a true cult classic. It is worth mentioning that, although I own an original copy of the game, being a title released in 2000 made it impossible for me to install and run properly on my current operating system. For that reason, I had to install the SoFplus mod, which not only fixes the game's compatibility issues but also allows it to run at a resolution of 1920×1080 at 60 FPS, whereas the original version was limited to 1024×768 at 30 FPS. However, installing this mod also comes with several side effects related to running the game at 60 FPS. These include spontaneous frame skipping, audio tracks restarting unexpectedly, slippery stairs and slopes, synchronization issues with bullet impacts, sticky textures, and other glitches. Despite these issues, I still believe the mod is well worth installing simply for the opportunity to experience and enjoy this fantastic title on modern hardware. But don't just take my word for it—judge for yourselves.
